The Green Earth has been promoting the programmes of “Guardians of Mountain Trails” and “Events Go Green” by bringing together the trail event organizers and participants to implement green initiatives, establishing a code of conduct for protecting the natural environment by adhering to the Leave No Trace principle, and engaging public volunteers to take part in nature trail protection:
Guardians of Mountain Trails
With the increasing popularity of outdoor activities and sports events like trail running in recent years, soil erosion and littering have put pressure on some nature trails. The Green Earth has been actively promoting the conservation of natural trails by building knowledge of “sustainable trails” and “Leave No Trace” education. Through various public engagement activities and the establishment of the Trail Repairing Volunteer Squad, the public is guided to understand trail problems, build awareness of trail protection, and take part in trail maintenance through action. After attending a series of training workshops, volunteers are invited to participate in different trail services such as trail maintenance, clean-ups, trail surveys, and assisting with The Green Earth’s public education programmes that promote “Leave No Trace” practices in outdoor activities.
Events Go Green on the Trails
Outdoor events often use a lot of single-use disposables and generate a huge amount of waste. To relieve the burden on Mother Earth, The Green Earth provides advice, solutions, and supports to trail event organizers, from event planning to the implementation of green initiatives, as well as engaging event participants. The objectives are to reduce waste, minimize carbon footprints, and promote “Leave No Trace” practices.
The Green Earth was established in 2016 as a local charitable environmental organization. They believe everyone in the community should embrace green citizen responsibilities and establish a sustainable living environment for this and future generations. Their missions are to facilitate action by igniting green energy throughout our community, to promote resource conservation and a zero-waste culture by changing attitudes and to turn Hong Kong into a healthy green city. To this day, The Green Earth has supported over 180 events in implementing environmental protection measures. In addition to reducing waste at source, they have recycled more than 270,000 plastic bottles, 47,000 aluminum cans, and 14 tons of paper, bringing environmental messages to nearly 940,000 event participants. In the past 5 years, 240 volunteers have completed trail conservation training and joined the “Trail Repairing Volunteer Squad”.
