Why Regenerative Organic?

It’s Farming the Way Nature Intended

Growing food and fibre with industrial techniques has devastated our climate. We believe Regenerative Organic agriculture could be a viable way to help stop climate change before it's too late.

Big Agriculture Is Broken

Conventional agriculture contributes up to 25% of the emissions driving the climate crisis. Regenerative Organic methods build healthy soil which helps draw carbon back in the ground.

Soil Is the Solution

Because healthy soil traps carbon, we believe this farming method has the potential to change the way we grow food and fibre and restore the health of our soil and climate.

What We're Doing (and Why)

In 2017, we helped establish the Regenerative Organic Certification, a holistic agricultural certification encompassing pasture-based animal welfare, fairness for farmers and workers, and robust requirements for soil health and land management.

Regenerative Organic Farming Practices

These practices help build healthy soil that could help draw down more carbon from the atmosphere than conventional methods. To do this, farmers use a range of methods that have been around for millenia.

Organic farming means no synthetic pesticides, fertilisers, genetically modified organisms, antibiotics or growth hormones.

Cover Crops

Farmers grow cover crops in addition to their cash crop to help increase soil organic matter, sequester carbon in the soil, and reduce erosion.

Farmers use waste from the farm and convert it into compost, which acts as a natural fertiliser and pesticide for soil.

Crop Rotation

A systematic approach where crop varieties are rotated from one year to the next.

Planting multiple types of crops closely together can produce greater yields and improve soil health over time.

Low- to No-Tilling

Tilling is a common practice that involves digging, stirring, and overturning soil. Reducing the need for this practice can help soil retain more water, organic matter and potentially store more carbon.

Regenerative Organic Certification Pilot Cotton

In 1996 we decided to exclusively use organic cotton in our line. We’ve taken our farming efforts even further with a test to grow cotton on over 150 small scale-farms.
